The final week of racing at the Spa and we are off the turf on this Wednesday card. We are waiting on the scratches, but anticipate some small fields and short odds to bet in to. I was looking at my sequence and I think we have a couple of horses that we can get a decent price on in our play. That being said, we will stay consistent and focus on taking down a pair of pick 3 plays. We will also have our "Play of the Day." Let us enjoy the great racing we have left in Saratoga and hopefully we can cash some tickets the rest of the week. Little Pete's "Play of the Day":
Race 3:
I am going to take a stab at this four horse field with the Steve Asmussen firster, (4) Nashville. I think that this horse will show speed right from the gate and not look back. I am going to take a gamble here with who I place underneath. I really like the claim by Linda Rice on (5) Breithorn and moving back up to MSW. I think this horse will be able to find himself passing the two other tiring horses and place in this one; I will be hammering a cold exacta.
$15.00 Ex 4 w/ 5 Cost: $15.00
Big Pete's "Play of the Day":
Race 4:
MTO runner Rejected Again will attract most of the attention but I like the outside runner to run by them all. (11) CASTLE CASANOVA has two solid efforts this year after some time off. I think Englehart was looking for this to come off the turf as well. Look for Jr to sit off the two speeds and kick in mid stretch. Leaky Cup, who beat him last time, returned to dominate in his next start.
$10.00 WPS 11 Cost: $30.00
$3.00 Ex 11 w/ 5,6,9 Cost: $9.00
Little Pete's Spot Pick 3:
Race 5:
We are sloppy on the main track today at this 7 furlongs and I am taking somewhat of a stand in this one. I am going to beat the morning line favorite, (5) Brunate, with the two inside horses. (1) Ringgood has the Jose Ortiz/David Donk connection which has been running pretty well this entire meet. I think the relief in distance and running in to a field like this will make this horse a strong contender. I know it may be hard to look past the 0 for 5 record for just hitting the board, but I am giving the horse the benefit of the doubt and thinking this class level is where he belongs. (2) Royal Suspect is my top play here who should excel at this distance and getting a sloppy track. I anticipate this horse to be sent to the early lead with Carmouche aboard for the third time and challenge this level to try and catch him. I do not think there will be another horse in this field that will be able to sustain enough energy to catch up on these two horses down the stretch, so leaving with just these two.
$3.00 WPS 2 Cost: $9.00
$2.00 Ex 1,2 w/ 1,2,5,8,10 Cost: $16.00
Race 6:
I landed on three horses in this one with all of the scratches. (4) Doll looks to be the horse to beat now with the move to dirt and having it sloppy. I am anticipating this horse to be favorite come post time and a must play. I also like two of the horses that dropped in to this one with (12) City Temper and (14) Miss Charisma. (12) City Temper wired the field last time out at this level and Lezcano has been blitzing the field recently, so we should anticipate him to do the same here. I cannot leave this horse off my ticket if the field allows this filly to get the lead without being pressed early. (14) Miss Charisma is kind of a wild card here with the ship up north from Jeremiah Englehart's barn. I think this horse will be very live in here and will be my top selection to remain undefeated in her career.
$3.00 WPS 14 Cost: $9.00
$2.00 Ex Box 4,12,14 Cost: $12.00
Race 7:
This race I am on the fence about. We scratched down to only four horses in here which tempts me to take the field, but I also like the Pletcher horses to get it done here as well. For the sake of the blog, I will be taking the field and hoping that we get the longest horse on the board but if you are looking to lower the price of the ticket I would focus on the two Pletcher horses. (6) Cowtown specifically looks to be in great form and we know will love this distance. I really like this horse to hit a WPS on.
$10.00 WP 6 Cost: $20.00
Big Pete's Late Pick 3:
Race 8:
(3) CONTROL GROUP has shown signs of his old self recently and Noda has stayed hot. They will be low odds but rightfully so. Look for him to control from the start. (5) OUR LAST BUCK has enjoyed similar success recently and will offer a stiff challenge. He hasn’t been this far yet and that’s cause for concern. I’ll try to beat them both with (4) EVALUTOR. He has two 2nd place finishes here at the Spa and now moves to his preferred dirt surface. Bond is also on fire and hands the controls over to Saez. Look for them to sit chilly while the other two go at it up front.
$7.00 WPS 4 Cost: $21.00
$5.00 Ex 3,4 w/ 3,4,5 Cost: $20.00
Race 9:
(1) BLAME THE BOOZE will be the one that benefits the most with the surface switch. This Blame won’t mind the moisture and should get to the front right from the start. The move to 7F will make it difficult for the others to catch him. (4) WINFROMWITHIN also moves up a few spots now that we’re on the dirt. Needed more ground in his debut and he gets it here. Wasn’t beating “Risk” last time, but fits here.
$7.00 WPS 1 Cost: $21.00
Race 10:
We’ll close out this Pk3 with five that I think have a shot in this MCL now at 7F. The two MTO’s will get a lot of action. (16) PIER FORTY is fresh off the Noda claim and will be a very short price. He’s moving slightly up in class so with everyone jumping aboard, this is a perfect time to try and beat him for a better priced runner. The other MTO looks more appetizing at a better price. (15) TRUE PALICE put in a nice rally at this level two back. Look for Cancel to try and duplicate that run and time it right. (11) K.K. ICHIKAWA is the one I’ll take a shot with. This Twirling Candy, out of a Takin Man won’t mind the slop and switches to Lezcano. Has improved in both starts and cuts back slightly. Should get a decent price here. We’ll also use (10) BRICKYARD and (7) DIANNESIMPAZIBLE in this wide open affair.
