Saratoga 8/20 Pick 3 Plays

Thursday racing at Saratoga and we have ourselves another nine race card; which is headlined by the Grade 1 New York Turf Writers Cup in the first and the Tale of the Cat in the seventh. We had a couple of races yesterday that didn't go exactly how we drew them up in our head, but that's show bizz. We are locked in to take down a pair of pick 3 plays today, as well as our "Play of the Day." I will be covering races 4-6, while Big Pete will be covering races 7-9. Little Pete's "Play of the Day":
Race 5:
I think that we can parlay this race in to a pick 5 to close the card using Big Pete's picks. I feel very strongly about (6) LeaveUWithASmile taking this one and should be able to save some money in horizontal plays. In race 6, I would recommend taking a handful of horses that you like to make it an even more manageable price. (7) No More Miracles would be a recommendation I give to include in that race.

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":
Race 2:
Simply Sweet is the ML favorite but I’m not sold on her even after a bumpy start. I can’t ignore the gorilla in the room (6) THANKFUL. This American Pharoah drilled a 4F work in preparation of her Spa debut. Pletcher/Saez will be short odds but I can’t see her getting beat. We’ll try to beat the rail runner for the exacta. Tonalist sends out (2) Tonal Verse and Hard Spun has (4) Heavenly Sis. Both will handle the 9F distance based on their dads so we’ll look for one of them to come late to get 2nd.

Race 4:
I only landed on two in here with (8) ThreePointNineNine to be our speed and (7) Disciplanarian to be our stalking closer. I think that (8) ThreePointNineNine will be alone in front this time and should be able to save some energy around the turn instead of being pressed throughout; which he was last race. I think this equates to a possible wire to wire situation for this horse with the aggressive Saez aboard. (7) Disciplanarian was in a good position around the turn last trip, but due to the size of the field he had to go 4 wide for the stretch drive. I think this much more manageable field will allow this horse to have a ground saving trip and be a big threat to catch (8) ThreePointNineNine late.

Race 5:
*Strong Opinion Alert* I am going to single the (6) LeaveUWithASmile in this one who is fresh off the claim from Danny Gargan and getting the Saez bump. I think that this horse is in great form for this level and most likely will not be in the Gargan barn after this one. This horse won in wire to wire fashion last time out against two other foes in this group and I do not see those horses stepping up to catch her this time either. (3) Mosienko also likes to find herself to the front early in races, but has consistently been catch by horses she should be beating. No one else in this field really catches my eye, so we lay it all out on the line for (6) LeaveUWithASmile.

Race 6:
Now that we have been pretty chalky in the first two legs, I think that we should spread out big time in this one. I think this race is going to be an absolute battle and could make a case for almost all of the horses entered (Sorry (6) Linns Boy, but I am not a fan). The horse that I really like in here is (7) No More Miracles. I think that this horse will like the move back to grass after maturing a bit and will be able to stalk the early lead and have some stamina left to charge late in this one. I still will be taking the field, but if you were looking for a price horse that I think has a great chance of taking this one it would be (7) No More Miracles.

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:
Race 7:
Only five entered here and (2) STAN THE MAN figures odds on to get it done against four NY Breds. After two dull efforts going long, Stan cut back to sprinting which is what he wants to do. Rosario fought to the end against Firenze Fire settling for 2nd. No one in here has that type of Fire to poise a problem for Stan. A single on many tickets. The only other I would consider is the resurgence of (1) T LOVES A FIGHT. This once classy sprinter came to life last time trying to catch Funny Guy. He can do the same here and move into the exacta..

Race 8:
(7) LEAD GUITER also figures to be odds on as she moves back in against NY Breds. This one drops to a comfortable level and is a 5.5F specialist. Gaff will need to keep her close early to collar the speeds late. (2) FLETCHING is the one that I will take a stab with. Her shortest distance to date has been 7F and she won them both. She has a look of a turf sprinter and may not get caught today. Look for Jr to be aggressive and gun her to the lead. I’ll only include these two.

Race 9:
We’ll make this late Pk3 affordable and only close it out with three. (7) JUST RIGHT just missed after being away for a year as Pletcher gives Santana another crack at it. Was the beaten favorite last time and meets the same rival again today. (6) FOOLISH GHOST beat up on this level two back with a front running score. Saez controls the front well and the cut back to 6F makes this guy dangerous. The interesting one fresh off the claim is (1) DARK MONEY. He ran against a salty group last time including Leaky Cup who jogged earlier this week coming out of that race. Jose gets the call and will sit behind the speeds and come late.
