I am back and ready to cash some tickets on this Sunday card at Saratoga. We are going back to our pick 3 format, with some vertical action in each of those races. It was a great opening weekend so far at the Spa, but would be even better with some WINNERS. We are headlined by the Grade 2 Lake Placid in the 9th. I will be focusing in on races 5-7, and Big Pete will be focusing in on races 8-10. Make sure to subscribe to the newsletter to receive notification of new blog posts and weekly emails containing a blog. GOOD LUCK.

Race 5:
We have some nice 2 year olds in this 5 1/2 furlong race on turf. (4) Thin White Duke should be the heavy favorite in this one come post time with his previous two races. We should expect improvement and will be strong throughout. What worries me about this two horse is that I think he is vulnerable in the stretch, and I am going to look for a firster to run a big race. (2) Martinez is going to be my top play here being the son of Twirling Candy and run a big race on the grass. (1/1A) are going to be another play for me as I think the race will be set up for a horse to close down the stretch, and there is nothing better than getting two for one on a horse. With that being said, with the scratch of the (11) Effinity I will be throwing in the other Brad Cox horse in (8) Competitive Hero. I am trusting the barn here with the move in surfaces and think this horse will run a big race.
$3.00 WPS 2 Cost: $9.00
$1.00 Ex 2,4,8 w/ 1,2,4,8 Cost: $9.00
Race 6:
My top selection is going to be (11) Zero Gravity who I think will be set up with some early speed and have the best sustained run and close on this field well. A big scratch in here of (6) Leitone, so that makes me lean towards (5) Financial System who should be the controlling speed in this one. (7) Sentry is getting a play from me here as he has the class, but I am very intimidated by the 9 month layoff; not sure if he will run to form or need a tune up. (2) Willing to Speed is my price play here with Johnny V aboard. I am thinking this claiming race is going to have some blazing early speed and that plays to the closers here. I think this horse should be able to break from the inside right to a pocket position and around the turn fan out to close well down the stretch.
$3.00 WPS 11 Cost: $9.00
$1.00 Ex Box 2,5,7,11 Cost: $12.00
Race 7:
This race feels like a two horse race, but I will include a *BONUS* horse in my play if she runs to her form. (1) IAintFraidANoGhost was bought for $190,000 and has been training to the price tag. She draws the red hot Jose Ortiz aboard and going to be a strong player in this MSW. (9) Lucifers Lair is also training off the page and looks to be a tough beat here and a must play on the ticket. Pletcher has been picking up some speed with his new crop of horses, and this one is looking to be a player. My bonus play is going to be the outside horse in (10) Our Flash Drive from the Mark Casse barn. I think this daughter of Ghostzapper will benefit from being outside the field and be able to sit behind the speed of (9) Lucifers Lair and be game late. I like others in this one, but putting my foot down a bit in this one.
$3.00 Ex Box 1,9,10 Cost: $18.00
Big Pete's Late Pick 3:
Race 8:
(5) LIGHT IN THE SKY likes to come from the clouds so she needs some speed up front. Two or three will go early so she may get her wish. She beat (4) MY SASSY SARAH twice so Sarah will need to improve or Manny may have to change tactics by staying close and make their move off the turn before her rival gets going. Either way, they both will be short prices but, must be included on the ticket. I’m trying to beat both with first time turfer (8) OFFICER HUTCHY. Her mom has enough grass to give this gal a chance at a price. She has speed to keep close to the pace and then try to get separation coming into the stretch. She’s faced some fast fillies on the dirt so, if the grass is greener for her, she’ll could prove best here.
$7.00 WPS 8 Cost: $21.00
$3.00 Ex 5,8 w/ 1,4,5,8 Cost: $18.00
Race 9:
(1) SPEAKTOMEOFSUMMER is the one I’ll key on here in the G2 Lake Placid. Was 2 for 2 as a 2yr old before being put on the shelf. Clement must be confident in her as he entered her in the G3 Wonder Again off the layoff. She ran well and it’s worth noting she finish close to Antoinette that day who ran 3rd yesterday in the G1 CC. Look for her to step up her game today. (3) LASHARA is the other filly that just keeps getting better. This Pharoah is bred to go 9F on the turf. Castellano subs in as they will stalk the leaders and then wear down the speeds. She’s the most likely the winner here. We’ll include the closers to fill in the exacta. (6) STUNNING SKY and (7) MIRABELL MEI both will be coming late but most likely come up short.
$7.00 WPS 1 Cost: $21.00
$3.00 Ex 1,3 w/ 1,3,6,7 Cost: $18.00
Race 10:
Rudy has two vets that would destroy this group a few years ago but, father time has caught up with them. I like one of them (2) CONTROL GROUP. Rudy used the grass for a public workout last time and the 6yr old showed some signs of running again. Now moves him in against weak runners to try and give this guy another Spa win.
(7) MALIBU PRO will be the danger. He ships in after facing better in search of a Spa victory as well. They will have to catch this one late as he will try to take them all the way. Cannizzo got aggressive off the claim of (9) STREET TRUST as he jumped him up in class. Now drops to the bottom to unload him. Should be coming late with (5) SHADOW RIDER and pass the tiring horses for a piece.
