Saratoga is off and running and the 3 year old Fillies take center stage. The Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks kicks off the first Saturday of the meet. It's just Big Pete today as LP is off sitting on a beach somewhere. I'm not going to lie, it feels very odd not sitting in the clubhouse seats watching the horses rumble down the stretch. Like many, it will be the first time in 40 + years that I won't watch the races live. BUT, we are fortunate that the horses are here and running at the Summer Place To Be. I'll offer a Late Pick 4 play ( races 8-11 ) with some vertical plays as well. I see enough speed entered here to focus on the stalkers and closers. One lap around the Spa oval is a bit challenging for most. That extra turn takes its toll. (6) MUSICAL HEART seems a right fit for this group. This long winded gelding will sit back early and come with his run when Jose says go. (9) HAMMERIN AAMER used a different tactic last time and wired the field. Today will be different. The nine hole, close to the first turn, will probably force Castellano to save ground and stalk today. If he finds a comfy spot early, he may be the one moving best late. I’m interested in (1) HOFFENHEIM pulling off the upset. He was beat by (3) CREATIVE STYLE last time but never settled or looked comfortable. He gets the rail to save some ground and has a big shift in the weights.
$ 7.00 WPS 1 Cost $ 21.00
$ 3.00 Ex 1, 6 w/ 1, 3, 6, 9 Cost $ 18.00
Race 9:
Irad may have been too confident on the Brown runner (7) DIGITAL AGE last time so today should be all business. That was off a 7 Mo vaca so I’m expecting a big effort today. I would consider a single but, Cox is have a year and may have found a good one in (6) SET PIECE. Won very easy first time on US turf as this Dansili should only get better the farther he goes. I’ll use these two only and try to save some bankroll. (9) MONARCHS GLEN can come late to grab 2nd if one of the top two takes the afternoon off.
$ 5.00 Ex 6, 7 w/ 6, 7, 9 Cost $ 20.00
Race 10:
I’ll use 2/3 of the field here as these fillies look like G1 material. (1) TONALIST’S SHAPE finally leaves Florida to try the big Girls. Working well and the 9F will only help. (6) PARIS LIGHTS is the one that stands out to me. She stretched out nicely in her last two as this Curlin/Bernardini filly will have plenty in the tank for this distance. Baffert and (5) CRYSTAL BALL may have the front all to themselves. If Javier can dictate the fractions, they won’t catch her. I only want these three.
$ 7.00 WPS 6 Cost $ 21.00
$ 5.00 Ex 5, 6 w/ 1, 5, 6 Cost $ 20.00
Race 11:
We close the card with NYS bred maidens. (10) TOP OF THE MINT could be the single we’ve been looking for. I’ll spread out a little but, he stands out to me. He was facing much better state breds last year before being put on the shelf last July. Returned this June and closed well in the mud. He’ll get some speed to close into today and banking Hennig will have him cranked all the way today. Not really a fan of the other runners that have already raced, so I’ll include some first timers. (2) AMERICAN PIPER and has two strong breezes in the morning. (6) ME’N SAP is a long shot from Donk with a nice gate work.
